Terengganu launches ‘Mencari Safawi 2.0’ to develop football talent
PERMAISURI,. The Terengganu Education Department, with the cooperation of the Terengganu Sports Council, has taken the initiative to establish the ‘Mencari Safawi 2.0’ programme to ensure that the state continues to groom future football talent.
State Youth Development, Sports and Non-Government Development Committee chairman Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the programme is inspired by the success of former Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) footballer Safawi Rasid who made his name in the international arena. Safawi was born in Dungun, Terengganu.
Wan Sukairi said as a start, a total of 20 players aged 12 will be selected to join the pioneer project scheduled to begin next year.
“We are working together with schools throughout the state to look for new talent who can be moulded to perform at a higher level like Safawi Rasid.
“They will be housed at Sekolah Sukan Negeri Terengganu Bukit Nenas and trained according to a special module to produce talent who are far better than who we have today,” he said at the launch of the programme here today.
Wan Sukairi said with strong cooperation from all parties, including the Terengganu Football Association, he is confident that the programme will achieve its main objective of developing football players who will bring glory to the state and country at the international level.
