Purple League Pro-Am 2020 an avenue for professionals to shine

KUALA LUMPUR,. The Malaysia Purple League (MPL) has taken a proactive step in organising the Purple League Pro-Am 2020 (PLPA) badminton tournament for the first time in an effort to create a competitive platform for the country’s professional players affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

MPL, in a statement today, said PLPA 2020 will provide an opportunity for professional players to return to badminton after almost 10 months of not competing.

Three professional players, Liew Daren, Soong Joo Ven and Iskandar Zulkarnain, have confirmed their participation in the championship, which offers a total of RM100,000 in prize money.

The statement said the tournament, previously scheduled for September, will take place from Dec 29 to Jan 3 at Kompleks Kejiranan Presint 11, Putrajaya.

The tournament consists of three events, men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

MPL chief operating officer Ho Khek Mong said the tournament’s main goal was not to just provide a chance for young players to compete on a competitive platform but also to be recruited by a club or even the national team.

“MPL hopes that this tournament can bring much needed excitement to badminton next season and enable professional players to return to court after not competing for such a long time,” he said.

In addition to PLPA 2020, MPL is also organising the Purple League 2020/2021, Purple League Junior 2020 and Purple League Corporate 2020/2021 next year.
